Overview

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Swim Instructor at Gloucester County YMCA maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swim classes. Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Swim Instructor will provide aquatic instruction using guidelines of the YMCA Youth Swim Lessons (YSL) to individuals enrolled in swim classes and promote the general safety of all swimmers.

Responsibilities

  • Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly, and supports members and program participants in achieving their goals.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with volunteers, members or program participants, and colleagues at all levels of the organization; helps participants and families connect with each other and the YMCA; and encourages parent or caregiver involvement.
  • Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers program participants and families to other programs.
  • Maintains records as required (e.g., attendance, progress reports).
  • Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
  • Develop and maintain a culture and emphasis on first-class customer service with the staff. Respond to user, parent, and/or customer complaints, questions, issues, or inquiries promptly.
  • Assess program for risk and loss management issues, and ensures all incident reports are completed within 24 hours of incident occurrence.
  • Maintain developmental assets and core values emphasis in all program areas.
  • Maintain and expand training skills and credentials for the benefit of the organization as a whole, and the YMCA Movement.

Qualifications

  • The successful candidate must have a high school diploma or a GED and be at least 18 years old.
  • Strong attention to detail required as well as excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid Certifications required within 30 days of hire.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Ability to work with many interruptions, handling multiple tasks in a calm and responsible way, always affirming the member (e.g., scan and smile, nod, wave while answering the phone, if alone).
  • Instructor certifications as required by classes being offered.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of maturity, patience, dependability, and the desire to work with all ages, especially children
  • Must be able to show initiative in the absence of supervision
  • Must be able to visually see all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility
  • Must be able to adequately hear noises and distinguish distress signals

Posted Salary Range
