Overview

The Senior Nurse is responsible for overseeing the health and safety of campers and staff across both Camp Ockanickon and Camp Matollionequay. This role includes supervising and training camp nurses, managing medical inventories, ensuring compliance with healthcare practices, and maintaining accurate medical records. The Senior Nurse ensures effective communication across all medical staff and with camp leadership. This is a safety-sensitive position.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and manage the camp nursing staff at both camps each session, including training, coaching, and evaluating performance.
  • Ensure all medical practices comply with YMCA policies, Standing Orders, and state regulations.
  • Oversee the organization, maintenance, and appropriate use of medical supplies and equipment.
  • Maintain accurate, detailed, and timely medical records in accordance with NJ State and American Camp Association standards.
  • Provide healthcare to meet the individual needs of campers and staff.
  • Lead staff orientation sessions on medical services, first aid procedures, and emergency protocols.
  • Ensure correct completion of incident reports and communicate with parents regarding their child’s health status as necessary.
  • Supervise and monitor sanitary conditions throughout camp facilities.
  • Facilitate effective communication between nursing staff, camp leadership, and other departments.
  • Serve as the primary resource for medical guidance and decision-making during emergencies.

Qualifications

  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) with a current license in the state of practice.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications.
  • Experience in first aid, emergency management, and medical care for children and adults.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience managing, supervising, or training staff.
  • Previous camp experience or experience working with groups of children preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical inventory management and healthcare regulatory compliance.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, and bend (including on the floor) for extended periods.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
  • Ability to lift and assist children up to 50 pounds and carry supplies up to 20 pounds.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in emergencies
