Overview

This position supports the work of the YMCA, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Group Fitness Instructor is responsible for delivering safe, effective, and engaging group exercise classes while creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for members and guests. This position promotes healthy living by motivating participants of all fitness levels, fostering meaningful member relationships, and providing exceptional service that supports member engagement and retention.

Responsibilities

Class Instruction & Program Delivery

  • Design and deliver safe, effective, engaging, and dynamic group exercise classes that align with YMCA standards.
  • Prepare and lead classes appropriate for participants of varying ages, abilities, and fitness levels.
  • Arrive prior to each scheduled class to prepare the studio, set up equipment, greet participants, and assist new members.
  • Begin each class with a professional introduction while wearing the designated YMCA staff uniform.
  • Modify exercises and routines according to participants' fitness levels and abilities.
  • Use appropriate music while maintaining branch-approved sound levels.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and required class documentation.

Member Experience & Engagement

  • Provide exceptional hospitality to all members and guests.
  • Create a welcoming, motivating, and inclusive environment.
  • Provide members with opportunities that increase their involvement, sense of belonging, and ownership of the YMCA.
  • Promote YMCA programs, services, and special events.

 

Safety & Risk Management

  • Inspect areas, equipment, and supplies before each class and report repair needs.
  • Maintain knowledge of branch emergency procedures and respond appropriately.
  • Conduct all classes in accordance with YMCA policies and risk management standards.

 

Teamwork & Professionalism

  • Participate in required staff meetings and trainings.
  • Support community and promotional special events as needed.
  • Represent the YMCA mission and core values in all interactions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

YMCA of the Pines has zero tolerance for abuse and will not tolerate the mistreatment or abuse of youth in its programs. Any mistreatment or abuse by an employee or volunteer will result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment or volunteer service and cooperation with law enforcement.

 

This organization takes every allegation of abuse or misconduct seriously and will fully cooperate with the authorities to investigate all cases of alleged abuse or misconduct. Employees and volunteers shall cooperate with any external investigation by outside authorities or internal investigation conducted by the organization or persons given investigative authority by the organization.

 

An employee or volunteer’s failure to cooperate with an investigation will result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment or dismissal from the organization.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Current nationally recognized Group Exercise certification (ACE, AFAA, ACSM, NASM, etc.) or YMCA Group Exercise certification required.
  • Specialty certifications may include, but are not limited to: Pilates, Yoga, Zumba®, Aqua Fitness, Barre, SilverSneakers®, Les Mills®, Adaptive Training, and Water Exercise.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification, or ability to obtain within the first 60 days of employment.
  • Minimum of six (6) months of previous group fitness instruction experience required; one (1) year or more preferred.
  • Experience teaching multiple group fitness formats is highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, customer service, and motivational skills.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Group Fitness classes are held in person, both on site and with opportunities off-site at YMCA supported events which may include some travel generally within a 25 mile radius.   
  • Frequently required to stand, demonstrate exercises, bend, lift, and move throughout classes.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment up to 50 pounds.

Posted Salary Range

USD $20.00 - USD $25.00 /Hr.
